Terras Need Four Points To Retain Title

Weymouth Reserves completed their home fixtures in style with a 3-0 success over Wimborne Town at the Wessex Stadium last night.

The Jewson Wessex Combination leaders proved far too good for their Dorset rivals who barely troubled home goalkeeper Paul Gadsby throughout.

Goals from Carl Mutch, Paul Lambert and Stuart Frear secured the win for the Terras who now need four points from their last two outings to retain the championship title.

Delighted boss Dave Kiteley said: “It was absolutely vital that we got a positive result from this one and it sets us up nicely for our big game at Gosport on Saturday. The destination of the title is in our hands and we have to return from there with a positive result.

“It’s unlikely that second place Eastleigh are going to slip-up now and they won again yesterday against Newport. But if we keep our nerve as we did last night, then it’s not going to matter what they do.”

After glaring misses by Marc Whiteman and Frear early on, the Terras went ahead on 20 minutes when John Lamb’s corner was met by Mutch’s brilliant diving header.

Lambert almost added a second moments later with a volley that just sailed over the bar, but the youngster soon made amends when converting from ten yards after Whiteman’s shot had been parried by the keeper.

The home side continued to create plenty of chances after the break and they completed the scoring just past the hour after Lamb beat two defenders before delivering from the left.

The ball fell nicely for Stuart Frear who fired his effort in off the post from close range.

Kiteley added: “I was delighted with the attitude of the players tonight, especially those who had played in the Dorset Senior Cup final the night before.

“We’ve been a bit hit and miss over recent weeks but this was far more like the Weymouth Reserves of old and hopefully we can maintain our form until the end of the season.”
