STEVE Johnson admits Weymouth’s promotion hopes rest on the outcome of tomorrow’s clash with play-off rivals Eastbourne Borough at the Wessex Stadium (3pm).

“Win and we’re still very much in the push for a play-off place,” he said.

“Lose and it will he time to start thinking about next season.”

“It’s a massive game for both clubs, probably the biggest this season for Weymouth.

I’m not saying we’ve got no chance whatsoever if Eastbourne win but realistically it will be a big uphill struggle.

“We could lose it and then go on a run of 10 straight wins and cruise into the top five.

But I’d rather get the three points tomorrow than rely on ifs or buts.”

With last week’s trip to Sutton having fallen victim to the weather, Johnson is desperate to see his men return to action against the team managed by close friend Gary Wilson.

It will be the first since the start of the Terras full-time dummy run and the boss reckons fans will see a big difference in his players.

He explained: “I know plenty about Eastbourne and I’m good mates with their manager Gary Wilson.

They’ve surprised plenty of people this season and they’ve done well to get themselves up to fifth place, which is where we need to be to make the play-offs.

Fitness

“Last week’s postponement was a big disappointment and everyone is champing at the bit to get going again.

We had a good run out against Portland on Wednesday and are now really looking forward to the game.

“It’s our first match since we started the full time training and already you can see a change in the lads both fitness-wise and in terms of their mentalities.

I can see it and I’m sure the fans will too and it will be good to put things to the test for real.”

Johnson includes three new faces in his squad – new signing Marvin Brown, Yeovil loanee Kezie Ibe and on trial former York City man Brian Uutton.

He added: “Marvin disappointed me in terms of his fitness when he arrived a couple of weeks ago and so he’s been training full-time with my brother Gary at Yeovil.

It’s already made a big difference and the lad scored twice for Yeovil in a practice match against Bournemouth on Wednesday.

“Kezie Ibe impressed me greatly against Portland and will definitely be involve and I also liked what I saw from Brian Dutton.

“He’s only 19 but he’s strong in the tackle which is something we desperately need.

I’ve offered him a contract and we’re sorting things out and so hopefully he’ll be available tomorrow.”

Ibe’s inclusion means he’ll be coming face to face with his ex-Yeovil colleague and flat-mate, Yemi Odubade, who has been banging the goals in for Borough since his move earlier this season from Huish Park.

“I actually recommended Yemi to Yeovil,” added Johnson. “and it will be interesting to see him and Kezie in opposition.”
