WEYMOUTH player-boss Jason Matthews has commented on the call to leave out club captain Stewart Yetton from the Terras’ starting XI during his side’s 6-1 victory over Slough Town on Saturday.

Matthews decided to use Ben Thomson as a loan striker against the Rebels, with the trio of Adam Kelly, Mark Molesley and Chris Shephard behind him in what was a change of shape for the hosts.

With the Terras on top in the contest, the player-manager swapped two-goal Thomson for Yetton and gave the skipper a chance to join the party after 66 minutes.

Speaking about the decision, a choice which he admitted was a gamble, Matthews told Echosport: “It’s never easy leaving Yetts out because he is desperate to play but I must give credit to him.

“Although he was hurt he was a credit to himself, a credit to the team, and he took it well. He is our captain and our talisman.”

Matthews, who also decided to omit his captain from the start against Leamington back in September, added: “He was disappointed but anyone you leave out will be disappointed.

“I feel that there are a few people that are really unlucky on the bench.

“George Rigg is also one of those and he came on and found a great finish on Saturday.”

As a result of Chesham United’s draw with Torquay United in the FA Trophy on Sunday, Weymouth’s scheduled home match against Chesham on Wednesday has been postponed due to the Trophy replay.
