‘Soft centre’ is a concern after Generals sink Weymouth

TIM Sills believes nobody in the Terras’ squad is assured of a starting spot after they suffered a painful 4-1 defeat at home to Chesham United last night.

The Terras’ assistant believes while Weymouth created a number of good chances against the Generals at the Bob Lucas Stadium, a “soft centre” defensively for their first three goals proved their ultimate downfall.

He told Echosport: “It’s a case of rebuilding from scratch and everybody’s now fighting for their place.

“I don’t think anybody can be sure of their place now and it will be interesting to see how they react.

“At times we played some decent football and opened them up but when you lose 4-1 at home that means nothing now.

“If we go 2-0 up at the start when we have had two gilt-edged chances then it’s a different game, but it’s easy to say.”

He added: “We’ve conceded four at home which is unacceptable.

“The last one we are chasing the game, which is fair enough, but the first three are all preventable.

“I said to the boys, unfortunately, other teams are going to look at us and say there’s some great play going forwards but there was a soft centre at the back last night and not enough heart when we are defending difficult situations to throw your body on the line or to be better than the man you are playing against.

“Defending set-pieces is part and parcel of the game and, if you can’t do the basics like that, you are struggling.

“If that carries on there is no chance of the play-offs for us.”

* While Bridport returned to league action with a 2-0 defeat at Shepton Mallet last night, Portland United’s clash at Hythe & Dibden was abandoned after 23 minutes as the match official deemed the pitch unplayable. The Blues were 1-0 up at the time.
