JAKE Wannell said he has “unfinished business” with Weymouth as he penned a new year-long contract at the Bob Lucas Stadium after turning down a more lucrative offer from National League South side Truro City.

The central defender was a pivotal part of the Terras’ stout backline last season, attracting interest from Truro.

However, after much deliberation he has decided to stay with Weymouth and he is gunning for promotion.

He told Echosport: “I’m absolutely buzzing. I’ve been weighing up my options and I feel like Weymouth was the best option.

“I felt like if I had left and they were promoted, I’d be gutted.

“I feel like it’s unfinished business.

“I’ve got some really good friends here, I love playing under Jase (Jason Matthews) and the fans are great.

“We should be getting promoted this year.”

Wannell becomes the ninth player to sign up to a new deal, but he was tempted by the other option.

Asked whether the Truro offer was tempting, he said: “Without a doubt.

“When they phoned me and said they were interested, I thought I was going to go.

“It’s a higher standard, I know the manager well, they offered me better money and it’s closer to home.

“But I knew I would feel regret if I left Weymouth.”

Wannell attributes the signing of fellow centre-back Calvin Brooks as a big part of his re-signing.

“Signing Calvin was a big deal for me,” he explained. “We’ve created a nice little partnership and I’m looking forward to playing with him next year.

“I’ve had my break now and I can’t wait to get started.”
