Frustration as Jason Matthews sent to stands at Cinderford

JASON Matthews felt his side “should have been 5-0 up at half-time” in their disappointing 2-2 draw with rock-bottom Cinderford Town.

The frustrated Terras’ boss, whose charges, in the end, relied on a goal from defender Stephane Zubar to earn a share of the points at the Causeway, was also sent to the stand by the match official late on.

Reacting after the contest, Matthews was honest enough to admit he felt it was “two points dropped” and believed his team were guilty of missing a number of first-half chances.

He told Echosport: “We should have been 5-0 up at half-time, we played some great stuff and picked up where we left off on Saturday.

“But a few of our old traits came back to haunt us. We didn’t take our chances after creating clear-cut opportunities.

“They were clear-cut chances, we didn’t take them, and made mistakes at the back.”

He added: “Cinderford had a 10-minute spell in the second half and really put us to the sword, obviously they got their goals and that left us with a mountain to climb.

“We almost did climb it but, on the whole, it was a really disappointing night and, for me, it was two points dropped.”

Giving his take on his own dismissal from the dugout – the first time it has happened in his managerial career – Matthews said: “I spoke to the ref, apparently I spoke to him in an aggressive manner and he sent me off.

“I was very surprised, I asked him for consistency and I felt he was very inconsistent. He was booking people for some fouls and then letting people off for the same (type of) fouls.

“On the whole, I felt he had a poor night and got the key decisions wrong.”

Matthews also gave injury updates on both Calvin Brooks, who failed to feature in the squad, and Aaron Rodriguez, who was left on the bench.

“Calvin hurt his back in the gym on Monday and wasn’t able to travel,” he added.

“Aaron also tweaked his back in the warm-up and was unable to come on.”
