Weymouth crash out to Wimborne

WIMBORNE 2

WEYMOUTH 0

WEYMOUTH crashed out of the Security Services League Challenge Cup at Cuthbury to a clinical Wimborne side that made the most of their chances.

Louis Kellaway’s early effort added to Rhys Owen’s brilliant strike late in the first half proved the difference between the two sides.

Harry Baker was recalled from Frome Town by Weymouth for the clash.

Baker, 24, returned six days after his loan deal was extended by one month and scored three goals during his spell at Frome, while the recently re-signed Calvin Brooks also started for Weymouth.

It was a much changed line-up for the clash, with only Ashley Wells, Jake McCarthy, Jordan Ngalo and Antonio Diaz keeping their places in the team.

Weymouth got off to a poor start when Louis Kellaway fired in after just five minutes to hand the Magpies an early lead.

The Terras tried to respond through Tiago Sa, who was making his first appearance since his one-month loan deal at Dorchester ended, when he got forward and saw an effort saved by Chad Collins in the Wimborne goal.

After 20 minutes, Brooks headed a Warren Bentley cross on towards Antonio Diaz but his shot went over the bar.

The game then settled into a lull, as Wimborne were intent on defending their lead.

Wimborne managed to double their lead in the 42nd minute when Rhys Owen whipped in a fantastic shot to beat Lloyd Thomas in the Weymouth goal after 42 minutes.

Wimborne then sought to further extend their lead and nearly did just one minute after Owen’s goal as Tobias Holmes hit the side netting for the Magpies.

The first half ended with Weymouth two goals down, despite controlling a lot of the play and Wimborne started the second as they meant to go on.

Within a minute of the restart half-time substitute Luke Holmes backheeled the ball towards goal and only some last-ditch defending prevented a third goal.

Terras did pile forward in search of a way back into the match and almost had it when Bentley got forward and pulled the ball across the box but could not find anyone.

Weymouth had a late opportunity when they earned a free-kick with five minutes to go, but the strike did not trouble Collins.

Yet Wimborne again went close to a third moments later, when substitute Aidan Shepherd lifted the ball over Thomas but hit the crossbar.

Try as they might Weymouth could not find a way to break through Wimborne and craft another goal back.

The Terras face Wimborne again on Saturday, at the Bob Lucas Stadium in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.
