Sorry About The Pitch – Chairman

Terras chairman Terry Bennett today apologised for the poor state of the Wessex Stadium pitch for Saturday’s 1-1 pre-season friendly draw with Gravesend and Northfleet. The uneven Radipole Lane playing surface was covered in weeds, daisies and buttercups.

He said: “It’s been a bit difficult of late because we are between groundsmen. One has recently left the club and we are now arranging the appointment of his replacement. I’d like to thank the committee at Portland United who offered to let us play the Gravesend game up there because of the problems. That was a top gesture by Dave Camp, Pete Turrell and others.”

He added: “But at the end of the day, we managed with what we had, thanks mainly to the volunteers who spent most of last week watering the pitch. People like physio Malcolm Coe and former director Trevor Haine put a lot of hours into getting it playable and I’m really grateful to both of them.”

He added: “Hopefully the new man will be in place this week and then we’ll see a massive improvement, ready for the start of the season proper.”

Other News from the Echo:
* David Laws, Alex Browne, Simon Browne and Ian Hutchinson have all signed new contracts with the Terras.

* Director Steve McDonald has decided to take a back seat role at the club because of work commitments.

Chairman Terry Bennett said: “Steve has a lot of work on at his Weymouth Sheet Metal firm right now and so he won’t be actively involved in the day to day running of the club. He’s agreed to remain a member of the board, but we will only call on him if we are absolutely desperate. The work he’s put in at the club has been tremendous, but for now his own business has to come first.”
