David Laws’ return to South Dorset soccer action with Jewson Wessex League promotion favourites Eastleigh has been delayed.

The Geordie hit-man was due to face a Portland United side now boasting his former boss Andy Mason in a top of the table clash at Grove Corner on Saturday.

But that fixture has now been postponed because Eastleigh are involved in the Hampshire Senior Cup.

Instead fans of the fourth-placed Blues will be able to watch their side in action on Saturday against Totton, another top Southampton-based who were originally scheduled to travel to the island tonight.

“Everybody was getting pumped up for the visit of Eastleigh and David Laws,” said Blues chairman Phil Laming. “But the Totton game is equally attractive because they are another side who look as though they will play a big part in the promotion race. They are just behind us in the table, but if they won their games in hand they would be up at the top so it’s another chance for us to see how far we have come. With none of the other leading teams in the area playing at home on Saturday we will be hoping for a good gate.”

Mr Laming said the re-arrangement of tonight’s fixture would also give the club a chance to do some work on the Grove Corner pitch which was one of the few in the area to host a game on Saturday when it was passed fit for the reserves’ Dorset Senior Division game against Witchampton United.

“We are delighted with the way it has stood up in the bad weather – but a week’s rest won’t do it any harm,” he said.
