Ashley’s agony for Terras

BRENDON King is backing Ashley Wells to bounce back from the horrific injury he sustained in Saturday’s clash with Bristol City.

The talented full-back came on as a half-time substitute only to leave the field on a stretcher just 15 minutes later after suffering a broken ankle following a crunching challenge.

Terras’ boss King, whose side won the encounter 2-1, told Echosport: “Ashley has broken his ankle and has also done ligament damage.

“The challenge occurred on the far side of the pitch so I couldn’t really see it but I think it was one of those where their lad came through and caught Ash, whose foot got stuck in the ground and didn’t really go anywhere.

“Ash cannot really remember anything himself. He was put on the gas and air, and he also had a painkilling injection as he was in such a bad way.

“I am absolutely gutted for him because he is a tremendous lad, who has been working extremely hard in training, but the good thing is he is only 21, he’s extremely fit, and I have no doubts he will bounce back stronger from it.”

New boy Scott Walker opened the scoring from the spot for the Terras on his home debut after Mark Ford was tripped in the box following a fine through ball from Stephen Reed.

Both teams knocked the ball around well in the first half but a misplaced pass by City, whose side was made up of academy players, enabled the hosts to double their advantage just before the break.

Once again it was that man Ford that was first to react as he raced clean through and rounded the keeper to slot the ball into the net in stylish fashion.

The Robins did go on to reduce the deficit late on with a penalty of their own following a mix-up between Chris Povall and Ashley Staines, but overall King was happy with the performance.

He added: “The first half was a lot better than the second half, which became a bit disjointed due to all the changes.

“Both teams had good spells of possession and the fact we scored a couple of goals again was very pleasing.

“It also gave us an opportunity to take a look at a couple of players so once again it was another great workout for us.”

Going on to comment on each individual trialist, King said: “Rob Farkins, who has just come out of the army, did well at the heart of the defence in the first half before coming off with a bit of a bad back, and I also thought Dan Smith (ex-Truro City) looked lively up front.

“We also gave a run out to Jake Wright (ex-Burton Albion) and I am hoping to take another look at all three again this week.”

One target that did not appear for Weymouth was ex-Bristol Rovers man Charlie Clough. King concluded: “Charlie is still looking at his options but there is a chance he might be involved tomorrow night at Wimborne Town (7.45pm).”
