Super seven for rampant Weymouth
By Dan Rose

WEYMOUTH cruised into the third round of the Dorset Senior Cup, as a mix-and-match Terras’ squad saw off Dorset Premier League outfit Cranborne with a magnificent seven at the Bob Lucas Stadium.Boss Jason Matthews hinted in the build up to that he would rest his key men, and there was just one survivor from the Terras’ ranks from the win over Short-wood United, with Jake Wannell the only man to keep his place.

And Wannell’s main competitor for a spot at left-back this season, Jordan Copp, was placed into a midfield role and almost played a part in the opening goal.

His in-swinging corner was headed by Sam Poole, only to be cleared off the line as the Cranes withstood some heavy pressure early on.

Poole then saw another header deflected narrowly over the crossbar, but the breakthrough only took seven minutes to arrive when Conor Jevon tapped home from skipper for the evening Tim Sills’ cutback.

Former Aldershot and Torquay man Sills was then rewarded with a goal of his own as he manoeuvred his way away from his marker, and nodded home Copp’s free-kick from deep on 22 min- utes to double the home side’s lead.

A superb double-stop from Andy Loader in the Cranes’ goal denied Sills once more, and he even stuck a palm out to stop a penalty from his nemesis after Jamie Beasley was felled by Pat Barnes in the area.

But cruelly for the Cranes’ stopper, Sills pounced on the rebound to smash home and make it 3-0.

Jake Wannell then latched on to a delivery whipped in from Luke Winsper on 38 minutes to make it four at the break.

Callum Laird reacted first to Loader’s fumble to grab a fifth five minutes into the second period and after having another goal strangely disallowed by referee Kevin Bungay, Jamie Beasley rifled home a rocket of a strike just past the hour mark to make it six.

But conceding with just under 20 minutes to go will have annoyed the home side, as a routine long ball was latched on to by Cranborne’s Simon Parsons to add a consolation.

Beasley’s surging run was then too hot for the Cranes to handle and he stroked the ball home to make it 7-1 and grab his second of the night.

And although Loader was kept busy late on, he held out for the final 15 minutes.

The Terras will march on to face Hamworthy Recreation in the next round.
