Brooks and Yetton late show sees off Robin

By David Williams

CALVIN Brooks and Stewart Yetton struck late on at the Bob Lucas Stadium tonight to give the Terras a sixth straight league win.

They were trailing to Sean Downing’s first-half strike when Brooks and Yetton scored within five minutes of each other.

Weymouth move up to fourth in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division and have still only lost once at home this season in all competitions.

The Terras made three changes to the side that started the defeat of Banbury last Saturday.

Ashley Wells returned from suspension, Jamie Laird was fit after a dead leg, and George Rigg moved up from the bench.

Jamie West, Steve Colwell and Sam Poole had to make do with a place among the substitutes, while Callum Laird and Luke Winsper missed out on a place in the squad altogether.

Bideford arrived in Weymouth with only three substitutes and one of those, Sam Chaney, was called into action as early as the ninth minute when Micky Parcell picked up an injury.

That was the only incident of note in the opening stages as neither side created anything in front of goal early on.

Weymouth skipper Yetton was ruing his luck on 17 minutes, and it was strike partner Tim Sills who may well have denied him a goal.

Adam Kelly battled to win possession and Yetton’s shot looked like it could have been heading for the far corner when Sills directed the ball wide.

Yetton then had another opportunity to break the deadlock but couldn’t get enough power behind a header from Wells’ deflected cross.

Despite the Terras enjoying the lion’s share of possession and territory, the visitors fashioned the first clear-cut effort on tar-get.

Ben Watson cut in from the left and fired a shot which former Magpies’ team-mate Jason Matthews gathered at the second attempt.

It was then Downing’s turn to test Matthews with a left-footed strike that the keeper did well to palm away for a corner.

The danger signs were there for the hosts and the Robins went in front on 38 minutes, and it was all too easy for the away side.

Chaney went past Chris McPhee without the Weymouth man putting in any sort of a challenge, before finding Downing in acres of space through the middle. Downing then lashed the ball past Matthews from the edge of the box to make it 1-0.

As the gusting wind picked up at the start of the second half, the Terras received a blow when Chris Shephard had to be replaced by Jordan Copp.

But while the home defence continued to look like it could be breached again, Robins’ keeper Grant Fisher scrambled back towards his own goal to prevent a Kelly header squeezing in.

The midfielder was then involved again, though this time Fisher, who had rushed off his line only to be caught out by the wind, held Kelly’s shot.

Weymouth’s defensive frailties reared their ugly head once more when Jake Wannell allowed Craig Veal to get a shot in on goal which Matthews parried.

At the other end, Yetton dragged a shot wide before Wannell made way for Colwell as conditions took another turn for the worse.

Then, with 12 minutes left and pretty much out of nothing, the home side equalised.

A set-piece dropped to Brooks at the back post and the defender smashed the ball past Fisher.

Five minutes later and the home fans were going wild again.

A lovely pass from Colwell found Kelly, he whipped in a cross, and Yetton did what he does best, beating Fisher with a glancing header to win it for Weymouth.
