WEYMOUTH first-team goalkeeping coach Paul Maitland believes number-two stopper Steve Boore has all the potential to make it at the club if he continues to progress in the manner he is at present.

Manager and first-team gloveman Jason Matthews was asked about his further options between the sticks at a recent fans’ forum, a point which sparked a lively debate.

The Terras currently have four goalkeepers between the first-team and reserve ranks, with Matthews and Boore also being provided with competition through Jack Higgins and Simon Higgins.

But Boore, who has also now made the Dorset Premier League’s representative squad, is currently next in line to make his mark on the Terras’ set-up.

Maitland said: “Steve for me has such a good attitude. He is exactly what you want from a number-two goalkeeper. He will train with the reserves one night and the first team the next.

“He is certainly coming along and he is benefitting from working with the first-team week in, week out and with Jase.”

Asked if former Chickerell man Boore would be capable of playing in the Southern League, Maitland added: “If he continues to work at the rate he is there is no reason why he couldn’t progress to that level.

“If he can stay patient and keep plugging away he can have a good career. He has just got to keep working hard.

“I see no reason why he couldn’t push on and play but he is still, in terms of goalkeeping, very young. He could do with being slightly more experienced but, as Jase said, experience costs you money.

“It will be interesting when we do get to the cup competitions, and he gets a chance to play, to see how well he does.

“We are really pleased that he has made the rep squad, I would be surprised if there is anyone close to him in that league at the moment. He is a pleasure to work with and have around, a lot of the first-team players have a lot of respect for him and you have to earn that.”
