THE Weymouth FC Supporters Association (WFSCA) is urging fans to come out in force and help celebrate the club’s 125th anniversary on Saturday.

Weymouth played their first ever game (as a junior side) against Mr Pope’s XI on September 24 1890, running out 2-0 winners. During that game the club’s first ever goal was scored by Jimmy Newport.

Step forward 125 years and the modern day Terras, led on the field by player-manager Jason Matthews and club captain Stewart Yetton, will be marking the anniversary at Saturday’s match against Bedworth United (3pm), as well as holding a special anniversary dinner at the Bob Lucas Stadium tomorrow evening.

In Saturday’s clash, the Weymouth squad are set to wear a one-off commemorative kit for what will be a special occasion.

The club indicated that there will be 125 limited edition shirts made in total, each will be uniquely numbered with the current playing squad claiming numbers one to 24.

Shirt number 125 will be mounted in the boardroom at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Speaking ahead of the event, Supporters Association chief Ade MacDonald said: “We’re hoping that as many people as possible will come along for the game.
“Across the area there are a lot of people who make it to a few games each season. There are those that used to be regulars but have fallen out of love with the club in recent years and there are a lot of people who keep one eye on results and how the team is doing.

“We’d love to see everyone come together for this game and help celebrate the anniversary.

“It’s great to be a Weymouth fan again these days. The club has turned a lot of corners over the past three or four years and the future looks good.

“During this anniversary year we couldn’t have a more honest and loyal manager than Jason.

“That rubs off through the team and, since he’s been in charge, a growing number of players are becoming fans’ favourites. People who haven’t been for a while will see a proper Terras’ team if they come along.

“It was good to hear chairman, Chris Pugsley, urging everybody to work together and help the club continue to move forwards.

“He encouraged fans to join the WFSCA and use it as a link to the club board. Over the coming months the opportunity will be there to give the town and community a football club that it can be proud of again for the next 125 years.”
