JASON Matthews has called for his side to “stick together” ahead of their trip to lowly Histon tomorrow (3pm), as the Terras bid to put an end to their poor run of form.

Tuesday night’s Red Insure Cup exit against struggling Paulton Rovers was a display the Weymouth player-manager “wasn’t happy with” and admitted he had a “few things lined up” that he wanted to say to his players at training.

But Matthews is fully aware that his team need to let their football do the talking this weekend and put on an improved display against the Stutes, who have shipped 62 goals from 29 league games and sit 20th in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division at present.

Matthews told Echosport: “We haven’t won our last two home games, that has brought a little bit of pressure on ourselves and rightly so.

“The last two performances have really hurt me.

“At times like this you need to stick together when people are spitting at you from outside the camp. That’s what I intend to get us to do.

“I need to look at the team, myself, and see what we have been doing wrong. We haven’t become a bad side overnight and two bad results do not make us a bad team.

“There has been a little bit of soul searching this week and it will be a tough game against Histon.

“We have to arrest that form and go there to get a positive result, there’s no two ways about it.

“People need to realise that it’s not about thinking you are a good player or we are a good team, it’s about going out there and showing it.

“I don’t want to fail this year. I don’t want to fail the fans or fail myself.”

Jordan Copp is back available for Weymouth this weekend after serving a ban.

Chris Shephard, Dean Evans and Pat Baldwin are also all expected to come back into the squad.

The Terras’ chief also indicated that the performance of Ashley Wells impressed him in midweek.

Reflecting on his side’s cup defeat, Matthews added: “I felt Ashley Wells staked his claim very well on Tuesday and that was one of the only plus points to come out of the game.

“I felt in the first half an hour we played some good stuff against the wind but in the second half we were poor.

“Overall I wasn’t happy and the lads know that. We need to draw a line under that and move on.”
