JASON Matthews was delighted with the way his side stood up to their critics during their comfortable 4-1 triumph at Histon on Saturday.

The Terras’ boss, whose side are now back in the play-off spots in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division following the win, admitted last week that two consecutive home losses had “brought a little bit of pressure” on his squad going into their tricky encounter with the struggling Stutes.

But the Terras performed impressively at the Glass World Stadium, and Matthews was delighted to see his charges respond so well.

Goals from George Rigg (2), Ben Thomson and Chris Shephard put Weymouth fifth in the league table, 12 points off leaders Poole with a game in hand.

Matthews told Echosport: “There had been a lot of soul searching, a lot of phone calls and a lot of people spitting at us if you like, inside and outside the camp.

“I feel very proud with the way my players have stood up to it and put in a performance.

“We started off like a train in the first couple of minutes and got the goal – then it was very end-to-end on what was a half-frozen pitch.

“It is always nice to score an early goal and it settled us down.

“It made for a positive afternoon, everyone was positive and I’d like to give a big thank you for the away support that came on Saturday.

“They were absolutely fantastic and it does make such a difference when they get behind us.”

He added: “I thought Ashley Wells justified my decision to bring him in, I felt he was outstanding.

“I showed faith in George Rigg and for him to get his two goals, I was really pleased for him. Chris Shephard was also his usual outstanding self.

“We need to start racking the points up, we all know that. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how we get those points, it’s just about picking them up.

“I want to be in those play-offs at the end of the season and we now have another three points on the road to our target.”
