PLAYER-MANAGER Jason Matthews was delighted to see his side grind out a 1-0 victory over Cambridge City last night and propel themselves into the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division top three.

A blistering strike from Dean Evans proved the difference between the two sides at the Bob Lucas Stadium, in a victory that the Terras’ boss believes puts his side “right in the mix”.

Matthews told Echosport: “Two wins on the spin takes us up to third and we have caught some teams up. Now they have got to chase us whether they have games in hand or not.

“We have a small bit of momentum now. It was a horrible week last week but two wins turns things around.

“We are right in the mix now and it’s where we want to be.

“I know we are far from the finished article but we will keep working.”

Commenting on the game itself, the Weymouth chief added: “I felt it took us 10 or 15 minutes to get a foothold in the game then we played some good stuff and had them camped in their half up to half-time.

“In the second half I didn’t feel that our ball retention was good enough. The ball did come back a lot but it was a case of grinding out what I would call a good 1-0 win at home.

“It wasn’t the greatest performance but the boys really dug in for me.”

He added: “Dean (Evans) has been absolutely magnificent this season and he is getting a couple of goals to add to his overall work-rate.

“I think you can never fault his effort and determination.

“In two or three games he has been out of this world and by far our standout player.”

Weymouth are now nine points behind leaders Poole Town.
