MATCH-WINNER Adam Kelly hailed the Terras’ mental toughness as they responded to Kettering Town’s quick-fire double to emerge 3-2 winners at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday.
A moment of magic from the Weymouth ace on 76 minutes sealed the game in the home team’s favour, and completed a resounding comeback from 2-1 down after Weymouth were stunned by two swift goals prior to the half-time interval.
Reacting after the game, Kelly, who was also voted man of the match, told Echosport: “When you go 2-1 down in a game I think it’s fantastic that we showed the resilience and the mental toughness to keep going and grind the win out.
“I know a lot of teams that I have played in would sort of roll over and not end up winning the game. In terms of our team it was really good.
“We spoke about it at half- time.
“Jase (Matthews, player-manager) believed we would win and he said not to panic.
“As soon as we got the equaliser we had the momentum going forward to win the game. As soon as we scored that one I think a lot of the boys started believing that we could go and win it.”
The result means Weymouth are now seven points behind leaders Poole Town in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division and, with a long way to go, Kelly is not ruling out a surge for silverware.
He added: “Jase said to us before the game that we don’t just want to be in those play-offs, we want to be in a title challenge.
“It will be difficult to win the league because there are a lot of good teams but as long as we are challenging, the worst thing is a play-off place which is realistically achievable for us.”
