DEFENDER Ashley Wells believes the Terras will be well-drilled from set-plays in the latter stages of their season after working on them intensely in training.

Following the Terras’ crushing 4-1 defeat at home against Chesham last time out, player-manager Jason Matthews admitted “people didn’t do their jobs on set-pieces” as the Generals took advantage to pull off a shock victory.

Explaining what the Terras have been working on since then, Wells told Echosport: “With the goals we concede we don’t get carved open too much. It’s usually our mistakes and that’s down to us.

“We usually base our training around things that have happened in a game. Obviously the game against Chesham we weren’t quick enough reacting to set-pieces.

“On the Thursday after we were in and that was literally all we did for a good hour. Defending set pieces and attacking them.

“We then got the reserve team in taking set-pieces against us as well in a little training match.

“They have obviously got a few big boys in their team and also attack and defend them differently than we do.

“We have adapted a new system of how we are going to defend them as well and we will be aware of it. A lot of teams in our league play for set-pieces and you need to be able to defend them properly.”

He added: “It’s something we can put right.

“When you are dealing with set-pieces you have to do it as a team. You can’t just ask the back four to do it and it’s just frustrating how slow we were to react (against Chesham).

“They were sloppy goals and we shouldn’t be conceding them.”

And while Saturday’s clash against Cirencester Town was postponed, Wells is aiming to get off to a strong start when Weymouth visit Biggleswade this Saturday (3pm).

“We have to get a goal first because it takes so much pressure off you as a team,” he added.

“Recently we have been conceding first and have left ourselves with a bit of a mountain to climb.”
