Striker Ben Thomson aims to keep on firing

TWO-GOAL Terras’ hero Ben Thomson is hopeful that more goals will be coming his way as he bids to fire the club back into the play-off places in the coming weeks.

The former Frome Town man, labelled by manager Jason Matthews as the best striker in the league in his opinion last week, backed up his manager’s claims with two strikes which proved decisive in Weymouth’s 2-1 win over Stratford Town on Saturday.

That result puts Matthews’ charges just five points below the top five in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division in seventh spot.

Speaking after the game, frontman Thomson told Echosport: “I was a bit flat for the first 20 minutes and in the opening 45 I didn’t really do a lot but with two goals like that it all changes and makes a difference.

“When Sheppy (Chris Shep- hard) came on it livened up a bit.

“I am not a natural goalscorer so it’s nice to be putting a few away lately. Hopefully there will be a few more.”

Asked about Matthews’ claim, the striker added: “They were big words and I don’t agree with him but it’s nice that he has that confidence in me and it’s going for me at the minute.

“When it’s not going for you, you feel like the worst player but when it is going for you, you just want the Saturdays to come round and go again.”

He added: “We have four away games now and they are all big away games. We can’t afford to lose a game now.

“In the changing room at the minute is a good atmosphere.

“We work hard and I do think we are going to get there (the play-off places) but we can’t afford to slip up. We can’t afford to lose against little teams anymore.”
