Calvin’s proud to lead Weymouth

CALVIN Brooks admits he is not sure how long he will keep the captain’s armband for the Terras at present, but insists he “wouldn’t mind doing it for a little bit longer”.

The former Dorchester Town and Yeovil man put in a confident display as skipper at centre-half, as the Terras defeated Frome Town 2-0 on Saturday.

And, while it remains to be seen whether he is given the responsibility again when Weymouth host Leamington at the Bob Lucas Stadium tonight (7.45pm), Brooks is looking for another clean sheet to aid his team’s push for the play-offs.

Asked what it has been like to captain the side in recent games, he said: “I love it.

“I captained quite a few sides when I was younger but the lads here are a bit like ‘what? What’s he doing with the armband on?’.

“Obviously it is always a privilege to captain a club of Weymouth’s size and I wouldn’t mind doing it for a little bit longer.”

Commenting on how the captaincy on the field at present came his way, Brooks added: “It was at Hungerford and I was really struggling. I went out and did a fitness test and it wasn’t good.

“Jase (Matthews, manager) basically said to me ‘I need you to play’ and I knew if we had lost that game we would have been in such a difficult position.

“I had to play and Jase said before the game that I had the armband and I was a little bit surprised, I must say.

“I feel I am doing alright though, and I am getting into the role a bit.”

A win for the Terras against the Brakes this evening would give their play-off push a huge boost and bring them within three points of the side currently sitting fifth in the league.

“It’s going to be difficult and we know it’s going to be difficult,” Brooks added, when asked about the chances of grabbing a play-off place.

“I myself have been looking at the league table a lot and it probably doesn’t help when you say ‘oh, where can we pick up points?’.

“The only way you can pick up points is to win games and that’s what we need to do.”
