JASON Matthews admitted he has sympathy for Sam Jordan, after the striker’s start to his career in a Weymouth shirt has been disrupted by injury.

The frontman, who arrived from Bradford Town with a prolific scoring record this summer, was forced off with an ankle problem in his first appearance for the Terras against Exeter City after just 20 minutes last Friday.

With Jordan not featuring in the friendly against a Bristol City Development XI on Wednesday night, Matthews is keen not to rush him back too soon.

The player-manager, whose side travel to Barnstaple Town for a friendly tomorrow night (7.45pm), told Echosport: “Obviously Sam is going to be a week minimum with his ankle – that was a week from Tuesday.

“He may be able to feature in the Eastleigh game but it’s a bit disappointing for Sam.

“He is another lad that has come in from a lower league and he is really young and hungry.

“I do feel for him because it has just not quite gone his way so far, but I did think in the 20 minutes he played the other night (against Exeter) he did really well.”

Weymouth are set to stay overnight after facing Barum and train there the next day.

Matthews added: “It is a bonding exercise. Barnstaple will be a good test for us but it’s about our squad gelling and getting to know each other well.”

Asked which trialists are likely to be involved in the trip, Matthews replied: “I would definitely like Dan Smith and Aaron Rodriguez to come with us, and obviously Dan Thomas.”
