JASON Matthews feels his Terras’ side are now “in a stronger position to kick on” from their disappointment of missing out on the play-offs last term.

The Terras’ boss was speaking ahead of the new campaign after their final pre-season clash with Truro City – a game in which Weymouth won 1-0 at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday.

Dan Smith scored the only goal of the game 15 minutes from time as the hosts saw off the challenge from the National League South outfit, who fielded striker Rory Fallon in their ranks – he played in all three of New Zealand’s games at the 2010 World Cup.

“I feel that we have had a really tough pre-season and the boys have passed it with flying colours,” Matthews said, when assessing his side’s warm-up fixtures overall.

“On the whole it has been really good. We go into what is a positive week this week, which will drive us on for Biggleswade next Saturday.

“I feel that we are fully prepared. Waking up on Saturday morning I felt I wanted the season to start now.

“Everyone has bedded in really well right from the team building at Barnstaple.

“It has been an enjoyable pre-season but we get no points for it – we need to take the positivity into the games.”

He added: “I feel that we are in a stronger position to kick on this year and maybe this could be our year.

“I want to go into it really positively. I want the boys to believe.

“The proof is in the pudding and we will see over the next couple of weeks.”

Matthews added that there are “still two positions that are really up for grabs now” for his starting XI against the Waders next week and that the knee injury picked up by full-back Ashley Wells against Truro would be monitored over the coming days.
