Charlie Davis: ‘We let the fans down’

WEYMOUTH midfielder Charlie Davis feels the Terras let their fans down in Tuesday night’s 4-1 defeat to Chippenham Town.

Davis played in the middle of the park and at right-back in the loss where Chris Shephard’s late strike was the only consolation in a dismal night for the Bob Lucas Stadium outfit.

Speaking about his side’s performance, Davis told Echosport: “There was errors as a team and errors as individuals that led to three sloppy goals.

“We played really well on Saturday and Chippenham did their homework. They pressed us and were as ruthless as they could.

“We played better in the second half but it was a case of too little, too late.”

There were boos at half-time from the home faithful as the Terras went into the break 3-0 down.

Davis added: “It was really disappointing, mainly for the fans. I know all of the lads echo that. We got a really good crowd in for our first home game of the season and I feel we not only let them down but also the team.

“We let everyone down.”

Being so early on in the season, Davis feels the side can make up for the poor result.

“We don’t think our season is over. We’ve won one and lost one, these things happen.

“Our game on Saturday against Redditch will be difficult but we think it is one we are capable of winning.”

The midfielder moved to Weymouth from rivals Dorchester Town over the summer and has really enjoyed his time with the Terras.

He explained: “I’ve loved it, to be honest.

“The standard of the players is fantastic and it can be difficult.

“It’s not a case of getting yourself ready for Saturday, it’s now wondering if you will start the games and if not, then how you will affect the game.

“The competition for places is massive and credit to Jason (Matthews, Weymouth player-manager) for putting that in place.

“All of the lads get on and if you don’t start there is no bad feeling.”

Matthews told Echosport during pre-season that Davis would have to work hard for a starting berth.

So far this season Davis has been played in a couple of different positions but it’s not affecting the player, who just wants to be named on the start sheet.

He remarked: “I want to play as many minutes as I can. I’d prefer to play through the middle but any other position is not a problem.

“I’ll give everything I can to the team.”
