Matthews says Weymouth performance was ‘a million times better’ against Redditch Utd

JASON Matthews claimed the Terras’ performance in their 1-0 win against Redditch was “a million times better” than their previous defeat to Chippenham.

The Terras’ boss, whose side grasped victory in stoppage time thanks to a Charlie Davis penalty, also believes his side “showed some massive character” to bounce back after last Tuesday’s low point.

Asked to compare the two performances after the victory, the Weymouth player-manager told Echosport: “It was just a million times better, wasn’t it? It’s there for all to see.

“We showed some massive character against a Redditch team that were obviously off the back of two straight wins, with some experienced players.

“I felt we totally outplayed them in every department.

“We had four or five good chances. I thought Aaron Rodriguez showed up well and Dan Smith was excellent.

“Redditch will feel lucky that they just got away with a 1-0 defeat.”

Quizzed on his emotions when Davis stepped up to take the winning spot-kick, Matthews added: “I have got some faith in Charlie over dead balls and I have got to give him credit for the character he showed in taking it, he struck it well to be fair to him.

“I don’t want to put the kiss of death on it but it (penalties) has probably been a bugbear of ours for a couple of seasons since I have been in charge, so credit to him.”

One downside for the Terras did come however, with Matthews also revealing midfielder Dean Evans sustained ligament damage to his knee in the second half against the Reds and will “definitely be out for Wednesday” against Frome Town.
