ASHLEY Wells is up for fighting for his right-back slot having missed out in the FA Trophy win in midweek with a knee injury.

The Terras player has been a stalwart in defence so far this season but, saw, from the stands, Calvin Brooks take his spot for their victory over Poole and the captain is set to start there today against Kings Langley (3pm), giving Wells some stern competition.

Speaking about his injury, the full-back told Echosport: “Tuesday came a bit too soon for me. I hurt my knee on Saturday and I wanted to play (in the replay), but the physio decided against it, which was probably for the best.

“I’m hoping to be in the squad today. The physio said that after a week’s rest the swelling should go down.”

With a watching brief in midweek, Wells had to watch Brooks put in a solid showing.

He added: “It’s tough to take because there’s already fierce competition for places and he is a class player.

“It’s good to have that competition. If you know that you are going to play every week then your performance level drops.

“It keeps you on your toes and the squad that Jason (Matthews, manager) has assembled is very good, a lot of us can do a job anywhere.

“So, to see another one competing for that starting spot makes it harder, but you’re more determined to get it back.”

Even with Weymouth’s deep squad, they have not been setting the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division alight this season, currently sitting 18th in the standings – albeit with a number of games in hand over the teams above them.

Wells remarked: “We’re underachieving at the moment, we all know that.

“It’s hard to take but there’s still a long way to go and we know we can put it right.

“The criticism that we’ve been receiving has been unfairly put on Jason and the management team.

“The players are the only ones that can put it right.

“We have to go out there and do him justice.”
