TWO-GOAL hero Jordan Copp believes it is down to the Terras’ playing squad to ease the pressure on boss Jason Matthews over the coming weeks.

Copp netted twice in the opening half against Cirencester Town on Monday in a 4-0 win he hopes can be the catalyst for a positive run of league form.

Weymouth, who currently sit 19 points off the play-off places in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division, are set to make the trip to St Neots Town on Saturday (3pm) – a side that have taken just two points from their last eight games.

Reacting after the victory over the Centurions, Copp told Echosport: “We can’t get carried away (by beating Cirencester) but it was a good stepping stone for us to try and push on and build something.

“Obviously that game gives us a little bit of confidence.

“We know as a group how good we could be, we just need something to click.”

He added: “As much as people are saying stuff about Jase, he only picks the team. It’s down to us that have been playing.

“He needed that win but we needed to do it for him.

“There are a lot of people giving both him and us a bit of stick, so it’s down to us to kind of shut them up, get on with it, and put some results on the table so they can start smiling a little bit more.

“Jase has built this team with the players he has brought in and it is down to us to do it for him.”

Giving his thoughts on the game against the struggling Saints, player-manager Matthews said: “Every game we need to go in and get something out of it now. It’s as simple as that.

“We have to win our games in hand and force our way up the table.”

The Terras are expected to be without Billy Lowes for the encounter as the midfielder has agreed a month’s loan move to Wimborne Town, subject to paperwork.

Matthews will also be hoping Mark Cooper and Stephane Zubar are fit after picking up knocks last time out.
