WEYMOUTH manager Jason Matthews remains optimistic about his side’s hopes for the campaign, insisting “the season for us is not dead”.

The Terras’ boss, who targeted the play-offs at the start of the term, has slightly eased the pressure that grew on him over the Christmas period, with two 6-1 wins in Weymouth’s last three away fixtures – the latter coming at Basingstoke Town on Saturday.

And while he admits a top-five spot is still a “tall order”, Matthews, whose team currently occupy 11th spot in the league, remains positive that his charges can put in a late surge over their final 15 league outings.

“Obviously we are still a long way off of it, which is incredibly frustrating with the form that we are in,” he told Echosport.

“We will have to win an awful lot of our remaining games to get anywhere near it and it is a tall order but as long, as the possibility is there, I am not going to give in.

“The season for us is not dead. We really need to kick on and have made some big strides with some good wins.

“There is always one team that comes late, why can’t that be us this season? We have given ourselves a lot to do but the boys have made a big effort since Christmas, when we were under a lot of pressure.

“If we could get ourselves in the mix it would be great.”

The side that currently sit in fifth – the final play-off spot – are Slough Town, who the Terras travel to tonight (7.45pm).

Matthews is looking for his side to record back-to-back league triumphs and close the 14-point deficit between themselves and the Rebels.

He added: “We will go to Slough in reasonable form. They have bolstered their striking options but I am looking forward to going there, it should be a good atmosphere and an excellent game.”

Ben Thomson (side strain) and Mark Cooper (hamstring) are expected to remain out of the Terras’ squad for the clash, while Matthews described both Chris Shephard and Charlie Davis as “very doubtful” after they picked up injuries on Saturday.
