PAUL Maitland revealed to Echosport that he would like to stay on with Weymouth in some capacity next season, despite the club’s future coaching structure still being up in the air.

As Weymouth continue their quest to name a new permanent manager, the first-team goalkeeping coach and current caretaker-manager alongside Mark Molesley, admitted his enjoyment of being around the set-up at the Bob Lucas Stadium means he would like to stay on, despite Jason Matthews’ departure.

Asked whether Weymouth was a club he would like to remain with next season if given the opportunity, Maitland, who will make the trip to Cirencester Town with the Terras’ squad on Monday (3pm) replied: “Yeah, I think so.

“I won’t lie, it hit me hard with Jase leaving because we became firm friends, but I do enjoy the club.

“I enjoy the size of the club and think it’s something to embrace.

“You can come here and get swallowed up by it or you can come here and embrace it and enjoy the aspects of it.

“Nobody enjoys the tough weeks but it makes you mentally stronger.

“Why would you want to be anywhere else? Particularly along the south coast.”

Maitland also confirmed to Echosport that, following a clean sheet on his league debut, keeper Nick Thomas will remain in goal for the clash against the Centurions.

“I was really pleased for Nick,” he said, following the 2-0 win over Chesham United.

“It’s not easy to make your league debut, especially when you are replacing a club legend.

“When needed to, he made a couple of really good saves.

“He worked hard for that opportunity and I am pleased we were able to give it to him.

“I am happy to say he will play at Cirencester, there is no reason for him not to.

“He’s a decent keeper, he has just been waiting to have a go at a better level than he has been at.”
