Weymouth FC are saddened to hear of the passing of former Terra Roy Gater.

Gater was born in Chesterton on 22nd June 1940 and passed through the Port Vale youth team to sign professional forms in April 1960. He was sold to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic for a “small fee” in June 1962, after making just 5 appearances. In his six years at Dean Court, Gater scored three goals in 216 league appearances. He then transferred to Crewe Alexandra, in five years at Gresty Road, Gater scored five goals in 156 league games.

He signed for the Terras from Crewe Alexandra in November 1972. He moved on to Dorchester Town in February 1974, where he made 73 appearances (3 as a sub) and scored 3 goals. A further move to Christchurch followed in February 1976 where he became manager. He then had spells as assistant manager at Poole and Bournemouth “Poppies” before returning to Christchurch to retake the manager’s role. As a Weymouth player Gater made 49 appearances (4 as a sub) and scored just the one goal. Off the field he was a painter and decorator until he retired in 2001.
