WEYMOUTH’S goalkeeping set-up is well and truly “under control” according to assistant-manager Paul Maitland.

The Terras’ number two, who was previously employed as a goalkeeping coach under former boss Jason Matthews, insists the club “have a goalkeeper in mind” as to who will don the first-team gloves next term, with a range of stoppers also set to work with the set-up in pre-season.

With Maitland stepping up as the assistant to boss Mark Molesley next term, Joe Prodomo is set to take on the role of goalkeeping coach, as well as offering cover to the first-team.

Nick Thomas, who featured between the sticks for the final fixtures of last season following Matthews’ departure, is also confirmed to be remaining at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Speaking about the goalkeeping situation, Maitland told Echosport: “It’s under control. Joe has been putting together a full programme for the keepers in pre-season, they will be working very hard.

“We have a (first-team) goalkeeper in mind and that should come out over the next few days once it is formalised.

“We are hopeful that we will be in a nice strong position and there will be an announcement imminently.

“We have also agreed that Nick Thomas will be staying with the club next season as well, and Joe has obviously come in as goalkeeping coach and will also act as cover on match days.”

Asked about the depth in the goalkeeping ranks, Maitland added: “We have one (keeper) lined up for the first-team and we are hoping, over the two teams and the development squad, to have a pool of seven or eight goalkeepers to cover the squads.

“Some of those will obviously be put out on loan because, with goalkeepers, they need to be playing, rather than sat on the bench.”

He continued: “Ashley Weeks and Steve Boore are both still in talks with Brad (Asagba, reserves’ boss) about coming back in and we also have a couple of keepers coming in on a trial basis for pre-season.”
