Weymouth bag friendly win at Wimborne

WEYMOUTH secured a 3-1 victory over Wimborne Town in their final pre-season game at the W+S Stadium.

Goals from Brandon Goodship, Ben Thompson and Jake McCarthy ensured the Terras go into their first league game against St Ives on Saturday in winning form.

Weymouth began brightly with Thompson forcing a save from Wimborne goalkeeper Gerard Benfield having evaded the last defender.

Benfield was called into action again just two minutes later when produced an excellent save to deny Brandon Goodship’s low drive.

It took until the 42nd minute for Weymouth to break through when Thompson converted a Calvin Brooks cross.

Weymouth doubled their advantage before the break when Goodship tucked home a penalty after he was fouled in the box.

On 57 minutes, Weymouth scored their second penalty of the day, with McCarthy stepping up to find the right-hand corner of the net. Wimborne managed a consolation on 73 minutes but Weymouth held on for the win.

Weymouth assistant manager Paul Maitland said the Terras had to “remain patient”.

“It was a tough workout. Wimborne are a decent side and they set up to make things very difficult for us. We had to remain patient and that’s something we’re going to encounter this season.”
