WEYMOUTH Reserves’ manager Bradley Asagba was pleased with the response his side gave after relinquishing a 2-0 lead against Totton & Eling at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Goals from Paul Ford and Flynn Wearden gave the dominant Terras a 2-0 half-time lead but Asagba’s men were checked at 2-2 until a Will Gape strike secured all three points for the hosts.

Asagba, who felt his side were in “complete and utter control” during the first half, labelled the win as “impressive”.

He told Echosport: “All things considered, bearing in mind last year’s start to the season, we’re just pleased to get three points and move on to the next one.

“Certainly in the first half we were in complete and utter control and we didn’t have to go through the gears. Second half we somehow managed to be pegged back to 2-2 but one of the things we look for with our players is the reaction.

“When the third one went in there was a real buzz about them. They celebrated and enjoyed the goal and just to see that will and go on and push to get the three points was impressive.

And Asagba feels the way the players celebrated gives him confidence that the squad has plenty of desire this season.

“Last season we scored goals and won matches and it looked like we had drawn or lost. That shows straight off the bat that there’s a real desire to win and just to play games and win matches.

“We know that there are going to be far sterner tests than what we had on Saturday. We have got three points on the board at the first time of asking so that gives us the foundation to build upon,” he said.

The Terras host Christchurch tonight (7.45pm) at the Bob Lucas Stadium in a rearranged match from last week as the fixtures begin to come thick and fast and players return from absences.

He said: “It’s difficult but it’s games and the only factor is that it will take us a couple of games to get our players back, so hopefully we’ll start to see the return of some of our players from today onwards.

“In my head, if we can put out the 16 week in, week out I would like, we’re going to be competitive.”

A win at the first time of asking leaves Weymouth in fourth place on goal difference as one of only five teams to have won their opening fixture.

Christchurch, meanwhile, will open their campaign against the Terras’ second string having been knocked out of the FA Cup by AFC Portchester on Saturday.
