Maitland expects Odd Down tester

WEYMOUTH assistant-manager Paul Maitland expects a “difficult afternoon” when the Terras travel to in-form Odd Down in their FA Cup first qualifying round tie tomorrow (3pm).

The Down have won their last three league games but Weymouth are unbeaten since the opening day of the season and lie in sixth place in the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier.

Consequently Maitland is affording their hosts respect and says the Terras “won’t be taking this game lightly”.

He said: “It’s the FA Cup, everybody looks forward to it each year. It’s a welcome break from the league. It gives a chance to take our minds off the league and go for something else.

“It’s a particularly difficult game. It’s important that we go there with the right mindset and right attitude. We need to respect them. It will be a difficult afternoon.

“We’ll be looking to go there and be as professional as we can and get a positive result. We won’t be taking this game lightly so we’ll be going with what we perceive as the right team to do the job on the day.”

And Maitland revealed he has personally scouted Down in preparation for the clash.

“I went up and watched them myself. The pitch is quite a bit smaller than what we’re used to playing on so we’ll have to adapt to that. I feel they offer a threat going forward and they have some good players,” he said.

Weymouth will welcome new signing Mark Cooper into the matchday squad for the trip to Somerset.
