WEYMOUTH club captain Ashley Wells felt “the occasion got to a few of us” during the Terras’ 2-0 Evo-Stik Southern League Premier defeat to Hereford at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday.

Wells, named the hosts’ man-of-the-match, also believed that his side “played within” themselves.

The defender was also quick to praise the Bulls, admitting that they were “clinical in both boxes”.

He told Echosport: “They’re a good team, they’re well-organised, they’re clinical in both boxes and obviously they defended very well, and they took their chances.

“The second goal summed up our day, it hits the bar and their keeper makes a double save from the penalty. It just wasn’t our day. But we weren’t great and they put us to the sword a little bit.

“We played within ourselves and I think the occasion got to a few us, obviously we didn’t rise to it, looked a bit nervous.”

And Wells is eager for the chance to make amends for the result and a lack of chances created against Hereford when the Terras face Basingstoke Town at the Bob Lucas tomorrow (7.45pm).

“The chances at the end we’ve done well to get but in terms of clear-cut chances I don’t think we had many and they shut us out.

“The next game is a chance to put it right, so we’re looking forward to it.”

Having beaten Kettering and Chippenham Town in their previous two home games, Wells thought that Hereford “did a job” on the Terras this time round.

He said: “Coming off Chippenham we were buzzing but to be honest we didn’t really play well against them in the first half.

“Teams in this league if you give them a chance and they’ve got strikers like that they’re going to put you down and make it hard for you to get back in the game. They did a job on us.”

Wells gave Hereford’s attacking unit credit, in particular their wingers Keyon Reffell and Garyn Preen, but added that the Bulls didn’t “carve us open”.

He said: “They’ve got one lad who runs off a big lad, you see that a lot in this league but their wingers were good, they created a lot of chances.

“The first goal is not a great goal, we haven’t really been carved open and then the second goal you can’t really do a lot about that.”
