WEYMOUTH goalkeeper Mark Travers credited his teammates after he kept a clean sheet against Chesham United, despite the Terras being down to ten men for over 60 minutes.

Mark Cooper was sent off with a straight red card in the 28th minute for a tackle on Chesham’s Oran Swales with the Terras leading 1-0 thanks to a goal in the 19th minute from Abdulai Baggie.

Despite the one man advantage Chesham couldn’t break through the Weymouth defence, who were bolstered in 32nd minute when Calvin Brooks made his return from injury when he was subbed on in place of James Hayter.

Travers said: “It was a tough game, we had to dig in with ten men. I thought the lads battled really well, kept the shape of the team really well, we dug in to get a good win.”

Speaking about the how the sending off affected him Travers said: “It’s tough but you have got to regain focus straight away, as a goalkeeper you’ve got to communicate really well and get the team in good positions.

“We thought we dug in, done well so I’m pleased with the result and the performance from the lads as well.”

Despite being a man down the Weymouth defence held firm and Travers didn’t have too many shots to deal with as the side got all three points.

Travers: “Credit to the lads, I didn’t have too many shots to deal with and that is because of them, they kept their shape, they just kept compact and didn’t really allow any chances and I thought we defended really well in the game.”

When asked if the clean sheet meant more to him having conceded three in midweek against Basingstoke Travers said: “Yes exactly, a clean sheet obviously as a goalkeeper and defenders is really important but just to get the three points for the team, morale is really good and I just hope we can continue the form.”

Travers praised Brooks, who made his return from injury in the 32nd minute, saying: “Calvin is a great player and it is great to have him back in the team, I thought he did very well.”

“He got up and down the line really well and defended really well at times as well so that’s obviously a big bonus to have him in the team, he is such a big player for us.”

Another bonus for Travers has been the return of Stephane Zubar, who re-signed for the club prior to their 2-0 win at home against Biggleswade Town.

Travers said: “It has been great playing with Zubar, obviously he is a proper defender he is very vocal and it’s good to have him fronting the defence really well.

“It’s obviously a bonus to have him in and helping out around, he’s an experienced head so it’s great to have him in.”
