Brandon Goodship hat-trick helps Weymouth dominate Redditch

WEYMOUTH 5

Goodship 15, 20, 82 Baker 60, Thomson 72

REDDITCH UNITED 0

WEYMOUTH signed off before Christmas in style as a Brandon Goodship hat-trick helped secure a 5-0 win against Redditch United at the Bob Lucas Stadium in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.

Ben Thomson and Harry Baker also scored in the Terras’ thrashing of the Reds.

Mark Molesley was rewarded for keeping the faith with the same starting 11 that won 2-1 away against Banbury United, with the only changes coming on the bench as Jordan Ngalo and Steve Boore came in for Lewis Harvey and Gareth Stewart.

Thomson, Abdulai Baggie and Goodship were working well together in the opening stages with a move between the three that saw Thomson get into the box but halted by the offside flag.

Weymouth started on the offensive and Calvin Brooks was making good runs into the box but ran into Nathan Fox, while another run resulted in a shot that rose high and wide.

The Terras were well on top in the early stages and came desperately close to scoring in the 13th minute as a corner caused a goalmouth scramble with Callum Buckley having a header cleared off the line.

From the resulting corner Weymouth tried a different tactic which saw Charlie Davis pass straight to a waiting Goodship on the edge of the box who fired in a superb shot which was again cleared off the line, before Stephane Zubar fired over from the rebound.

Weymouth would not have to wait long for the lead as Goodship embarked on a lovely run down the left-hand side, working well with Thomson before he cut in to fire a wonderful curling shot past Ethan Ross in goal in the 15th minute.

Goodship secured a brace shortly after, cutting inside once more before firing past Ross to put the Terras 2-0 up after 20 minutes.

This seemed to spark the away side into life as Ashley Sammons prompted Mark Travers into a wonderful save with a shot from just outside the box.

From the corner, taken by Sammons, Redditch created a goalmouth scramble but the ball eventually came to Baggie who broke away to relieve the pressure.

Fox and Kevin de Veiga Monteiro were proving a threat down the left-hand side for Redditch and a long run from Fox earned a corner from which de Veiga Monteiro took a great shot which had to be headed away by a leaping Callum Buckley.

They again combined well six minutes later as a good move led to Zubar having to put the ball out for a corner, from which Sammons crossed the ball over everyone in the box.

Brooks and Baggie were combining to good effect down the right-hand side and a promising run from the former fed the latter, whose deep cross was collected by Ross.

The first-half ended with a deserved lead for the Terras while the second started with Redditch pressuring Weymouth but not creating many clear cut opportunities while the Terras seemed happy to play on the break.

This approach saw Weymouth secure their third as a run forward from Goodship and quick feet from Baggie enabled him to get on the end of a ball forward.

He played Goodship into the box close to the by-line where his shot caused a goalmouth scramble from which Baker fired home.

Thomson widened the margin again in the 72nd minute as he got on the end of a cross, controlled the ball well to create space, and fired home.

From here the Terras were in complete control as Goodship came close on two occasions to sealing a hat-trick.

But Goodship did secure his hat-trick at the third time of asking, sealing the rout for Weymouth in the 82nd minute as he drove home from the edge of the box.

The closing stages saw Weymouth see out the win but the match ended on a sour note as Ben Thomson limped off the pitch after a challenge moments before full-time.

Weymouth are next in action on Boxing Day when they face Dorchester Town at the Bob Lucas Stadium in the Ridgeway derby.
