CALLUM Buckley has said he is delighted after signing a contract extension with Weymouth on Saturday following the 3-0 win away against Merthyr Town in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.

Buckley has extended his contract by a year which will see him stay at the Bob Lucas Stadium until the end of next season.

Buckley said: “I am delighted to sign a contract extension with Weymouth, it has been a pleasure to play for them.

“I am really happy to sign another deal because there are some good players here some really talented players and the staff and the fans are brilliant as well.”

The 22-year-old joined the Terras last May from Bournemouth, having worked with Weymouth manager Mark Molesley in the youth set up.

When asked how he felt his performances for Weymouth in his first year have been Buckley said: “I have been happy, I was getting used to the league at the start and now I feel like I am a lot more comfortable.

“I have enjoyed my time playing here and again it does help when you have got staff around trying to help me, you have got the analysis, you have got the coaches you have got all the staff that help you out and then you have got some really good players around me that make you feel a lot more comfortable.

“I am always looking to improve my game as much as I can.”

Buckley has captained the Terras on numerous occasions when captain Jake McCarthy was out with appendicitis.

Buckley said: “It was a brilliant moment for me, unfortunately for Jake he had his appendix out so it was nice for me to get the call up to captain the team. It was an absolute pleasure to do it.

“It was brilliant to captain the brilliant group of players that we have.”

When asked about the spirit within the squad Buckley said: “It is easily the best one that I have been involved in. There are great characters in the group that are all looking to improve and all looking to go in one direction. So we are all quite motivated to win games and do well and be as professional as we can.”

When asked about his own aims for the rest of the season Buckley said: “I want to keep improving for myself personally, I want to keep improving, as a group though we take every game as it comes.

“Hopefully get as many wins and as many points between now until the end of the season and just see where it gets us.”

Weymouth can now look forward to two consecutive matches at home following a spell of six away matches out of eight in the league.

Buckley said: “It has been a long old slog but you have to endure away games like that in every season unfortunately.

“It will be nice to be back at home in front of our supporters and hopefully we can really get them going at home.

After a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Dunstable Town the Terras reacted in style as they have now won their last three matches scoring 11 and conceding one in a run that saw them come from behind to beat Royston Town 2-1 while they beat Merthyr Town 3-0 and thrashed Farnborough 6-0.

Commenting on their form Buckley said: “We are really happy, we had a disappointment at Dunstable away and we had to bounce back from that and I think as a group we probably bounce back better than anyone expected us to.

“We know what we are capable of in this group but we are taking one game as it comes and making sure when we face St Neots at home and we put in a performance there and that is all we are worried about.”

Weymouth are next in action when they face St Neots at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday (3pm).
