Weymouth hit super six as island side sunk
WEYMOUTH eased to victory over the British Virgin Islands in a well-fought friendly, with Josh Wakefield, Charlie Davis, Sanchez Baker, Lewis Harvey, Harry Baker and Elliot Rossiter scoring in a 6-1 win.
Weymouth manager Mark Molesley gave himself a start, alongside Jordan Ngalo, Harry Baker and Wakefield.
Sanchez Baker, on dual registration with both Weymouth and Portland United, also started, while Weymouth youngster Bailey Rowe made the bench for the Virgin Islands.
Harry Baker made a great start and nearly scored inside two minutes for Weymouth but saw his effort cleared off the goal-line.
Shortly after visiting keeper Ben Chapman narrowly got a touch that took the ball away from a charging Harry Baker, Wakefield slotted in to give the Terras a lead after nine minutes.
Patrick Spiteri then narrowly failed to find Davis with a cross after a great run into the box.
Sanchez Baker nearly scored with a shot from just inside the box which forced Ben Chapman into a superb save to tip over for a corner.
After Sanchez Baker was fouled, Davis then stepped up to tuck home the penalty and put the Terras 2-0 up after 18 minutes.
Patrick Spiteri was making a good impression and, after winning a corner, he found himself back to clear away a dangerous cross from Christian Xavier after the British Virgin Islands had quickly broken away.
Weymouth youngster Bailey Rowe came on for Taylor Forbes who took a knock for the British Virgin Islands.
The two Bakers linked up well with Sanchez finding Harry, who returned the ball to allow Sanchez to fire in Weymouth’s third after 39 minutes.
The Terras were well on top of the team that were fresh faced, containing a lot of youngsters. and had mostly met since starting their training camp on Monday in Milton Abbey.
The first half ended with the Terras 3-0 up and in control of the game.
Terras’ youngster Rowe got the ball in the Terras’ box after a great move but could not fire in a shot in the second period.
Harry Baker then had a goal ruled out for offside after a great move between him and Davis after 52 minutes.
Moments later, Rowe shot inches wide with Steve Boore in the Weymouth goal beaten. Rowe was having a strong start to the second half as he again took a shot that deflected out for a corner.
British Virgin Islands were much improved as from a free-kick 23 yards out Robbie Green fired inches wide.
Despite this, it would be Weymouth who extended their lead as, moments after manager Molesley went off, Lewis Harvey headed in a Wakefield corner.
Harry Baker then grabbed a goal to put Weymouth 5-0 up after 63 minutes.
Rowe again forced Boore into another good save as he tipped over a shot as the Virgin Islands looked to get a goal back.
A raft of substitutions saw the play broken up but the Virgin Islands were able to have spells of putting the Terras under real pressure.
Carlos Septus got a late consolation for the BVI firing in from distance after 87 minutes.
A minute later, Rossiter scored the sixth for the Terras.
Weymouth host Banbury United in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division on Saturday (3pm).
