Weymouth ‘gutted’ by play-off loss

WEYMOUTH manager Mark Molesley reflected on a fantastic season that ended with a gutting 3-0 defeat at King’s Lynn Town in the play-off semi-final in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.

Three superb first-half goals from Cameron Norman, Craig Parker and Cameron King saw Weymouth taste defeat in the play-off semi-final after Molesley’s first full season in charge of the Terras.

Molesley said: “It is hard. The boys have done magnificently well in their first season.

“I think when we first took over nobody gave us a chance, no one thought we would be where we were. So to get 97 points in your first season is quite remarkable and the boys can take full credit for that. They have been excellent.

“I think they have restored a lot of hope and faith and put Weymouth back on the footballing map.”

Molesley lamented the way the season came to an end with the defeat to the side that finished three points and three places above them in the table.

Molesley said: “It was a fantastic league campaign and it has come down to a one-off game tonight where unfortunately we have come off the back of a result we are desperately, desperately gutted about.”

Molesley credited the nature of the Linnets’ goals, as he said: “To lose the game to three goals which were over 25 yards into the top corner sometimes you have just got to put your hands up and say it might not be your night.

“We will always look and be harsh on ourselves, I think there were little bits we could have done better.

“I will always be hard on myself as a manager and I will reflect on it and make sure we come back stronger next year.

“Sometimes at this stage of the season you might need the rub of the green and it was three unbelievable goals from them.

“King’s Lynn came second with 100 points and we were three points behind them. There was not much between us going into the match and I do not think there was not much between us during the game.”
