Liam Farrugia vows to keep working hard for Weymouth

VERSATILE Weymouth player Liam Farrugia has vowed to “keep training hard” in order to gain a more regular first-team berth.

Farrugia, who scored a superb late equaliser for the Terras in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Hamworthy United, is comfortable in both midfield and defence.

Playing as a defender against the Hammers, Farrugia has also ventured into midfield against Kingstonian and sees central midfield as his ideal position.

Speaking to Echosport prior to his long-range belter at Hamworthy, Farrugia insisted he would remain “patient” in his quest to break into the Terras’ starting XI.

He said: “Obviously my predominant position is central midfield, but I’ll play wherever to help the team. If we’re short at left-back, I’ll play left-back.

“I’ll just keep training hard, stay focused, patient and when I get my chance hopefully kick on from there.”

Farrugia also gave an insight into Weymouth’s condition in pre-season, believing the Terras’ squad to be “sharp” as the Southern Premier South campaign approaches.

He said: “The coach (Mark Molesley) is working us hard, everyone’s looking sharp. Training is hard but enjoyable at the same time. Everyone’s getting along well.

“My fitness is getting better and better throughout pre-season. We’re doing more and more runs and it’s more intense with the ball work, so it’s good.”

Farrugia added that he was looking to “push” the Weymouth midfield, with hot competition for places at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

He said: “Personally, I just want to push on, push the other players in the middle of the park and for the squad to make the play-offs or even win the league.”
