Despite bagging a hat-trick for himself, Brandon Goodship took time to praise his teammates who were “massively important” in assisting his three goals in Weymouth’s 3-2 victory over Harrow Borough at the Earlsmead Stadium.
The 23-year-old forward, who finished last season as the league’s top goalscorer with 38 goals, started this season’s campaign in style by scoring an impressive hat-trick, which included a goal from the penalty spot followed by strikes with his right and then left boot.
The forward admitted it was good to be scoring again, speaking to theterras.com after the opening-day victory Goodship said, “It was a relief to get off the mark and because the first was a penalty it was a bit iffy!
“It was more delight than relief though. I’m just delighted to get the three points, which was a contrast to last season when we started with an opening-day defeat.
“As soon as the first one went in I had that feeling that I had from last season back, I was delighted to open my account.
“The three points was the most important thing but on a personal note I’m delighted to have a hat-trick and start the season with a win.”
Abdulai Baggie’s hard-work and persistence played a massive part in setting up Goodship’s first two goals. Baggie was brought down when through on goal to win the Terras a penalty in the first half before playing a precision pass across the box to set up Goodship’s second goal of the game.
Goodship also praised fellow forward Ben Thomson saying, “Baggie and Thomson’s assistance is massively important, I don’t get the goals unless they get the ball and set them up for me.
“Baggie has put one on a plate for me and Thommo’s touch for my hat-trick was different class; they’ve carried that on from last season, they were massive players, as were a few others like Charlie Davis and Josh Carmichael.
“All of them contribute and without them I wouldn’t be scoring like I have been. The credit should go to them just as much as me.”
Speaking ahead of the game against nearly promoted Taunton Town at the Bob Lucas Stadium tomorrow evening (7:45PM kick off), the former AFC Bournemouth front-man called on the town to come out in numbers to support the side, citing last season’s “unbelievable” support.
“It’s got to be a big crowd on Tuesday,” added Goodship. “After our season last year you’d like to think that Weymouth as a town will get behind us, the crowds at the end of last season were unbelievable.
“The boys’ heads will be turned to Tuesday night’s game and we’re be preparing for that.”
