WEYMOUTH goal hero Josh Wakefield admits he has the “simple job” in playing, rather than having to pick the Terras’ starting XI each week.

Wakefield came off the bench to score an 88th-minute leveller in the 1-1 draw against Beaconsfield Town on Saturday.

The former Bournemouth and Aldershot Town man is not envious of boss Mark Molesley’s task of handling the competition for places with the Terras’ squad.

Increased demand for a place means Wakefield still awaits a first start of the season, having broken his hand in pre-season.

He told Echosport: “Last season I literally started half as many as I came off the bench for, it was 50/50.

“This season I broke my hand in pre-season but I haven’t started a game yet, which is disappointing for me.

“Bringing in players like Josh McQuoid and Warren Bentley, who we haven’t seen yet, there’s a lot of competition for places. When a team is winning a lot it’s difficult to change it.

“We’re still unbeaten and it’s difficult to get into the team, so I can’t really complain.”

When asked if his goal might catch the attention of the Weymouth management, Wakefield said: “Let’s hope so. Whether it’s off the bench or starting, I’ll always give my all and try to impress.

“Thankfully for me I don’t get paid to make those decisions. I’ve got the simple job – I don’t have to pick the team, it’s difficult to keep everyone happy.”

Commenting on his goal, Wakefield was glad to contribute in what he believes feels like a “new league”.

He said: “Definitely a point is the least we deserved. Coming off the bench to score is always nice, even from two yards. They still count.

“It’s nice to help keep the unbeaten streak going and hopefully I’ll get a few more.

“Because the league is so different it’s almost like playing in a new league. We don’t really know what to expect, a lot of teams we haven’t played.

“Harrow and Taunton, both of those are new to us. We’ll keep doing what works so well and hopefully go one better and go up as quick as we can.”
