Banbury end FA Cup hopes for Weymouth
BANBURY UNITED 2
Awadh 39, Rasulo 90+1
WEYMOUTH 1
Zubar 90+5
A DEFLECTED Amer Awadh strike and a Giorgio Rasulo penalty proved the difference as Weymouth fell in their FA Cup first qualifying round replay at Banbury United.
The two teams were well-matched but Weymouth could not find a way through to consistently trouble Banbury goalkeeper James Goff until a late Stephane Zubar header.
The Terras made two changes as Mark Molesley brought in Ashley Wells and Warren Bentley, the latter of whom made his first start for the club, in place of Antonio Diaz and Abdulai Baggie.
Banbury got off to a bright start when Greg Kaziboni fired a shot in that forced Weymouth stopper Jordan Seabright into an early save.
Weymouth would not have to wait long for their first chance however, as Brandon Goodship linked up well with Ben Thomson before the former fired a shot over the bar.
Much like Saturday’s game the match was end-to-end as Awadh fired over for the Puritans moments later.
Jake McCarthy then had to be alert to clear a dangerous cross in from Banbury as they again got forward.
However, Goodship then brought a great save out of Banbury goalkeeper Goff who also saved Jordan Ngalo’s follow up effort.
A free-kick from Mark Bell then brought out another good chance for the home side as Lee Henderson headed wide for the Puritans.
Five minutes later Josh Wakefield then fired wide after doing well to control a bouncing ball.
The breakthrough did come however, but it came for the home side with a deflected shot from Awadh that cruelly looped over Seabright and into the net.
The Puritans nearly doubled their lead moments later as Awadh then turned provider for Kaziboni who produced a fantastic save from Seabright.
The two teams went in with Banbury ahead but the two teams were equal in terms of play, with Awadh’s goal dividing the two.
Josh McQuoid had an early chance in the second half for Weymouth but saw his shot fly over the bar.
Awadh then got forward for Banbury and fed the ball to Kaziboni, but McCarthy was there to block away for a corner which was swung in harmlessly and eventually out for a goal-kick.
Josh Carmichael was then booked for a foul on Kaziboni as the latter looked to break away.
Seabright clashed with a Puritan but he dropped the ball which went into the net and it was disallowed to the chagrin of Banbury’s players.
Seabright recovered and soon was called into action, saving well from Awadh. From the corner Henderson headed over.
McQuoid then went down injured with a knee issue following a Banbury corner and was substituted for Diaz.
Another attack from the Puritans saw Jack Finch pour forward and attempt to square the ball to Shamsi when bearing down on goal but he could not find his man and Weymouth were able to clear for a corner.
From the set-piece Shamsi swung it in but Charlie Wise headed wide for the Puritans.
Baggie got forward and swung in a cross looking for McCarthy at the far post but it was cleared away by Banbury.
Weymouth were starting to find their range again as from a corner Goodship was able to claim the ball but saw his effort curl over the bar from 25 yards out.
Diaz whipped in a cross but it went too close to Banbury goalkeeper Goff who saved.
McCarthy then had a great chance after Baggie pulled the ball back to him but his effort was blocked away from danger.
Ngalo did well to put a dangerous cross in but the ball was cleared away from danger as Weymouth ended the match strongly.
Goodship saw an effort fly over the bar after good work from Wells, however, McCarthy fouled an onrushing Kaziboni to hand Banbury a late penalty which Rasulo fired in.
Zubar narrowed the scores late on but it was too late as the whistle blew shortly after, Banbury securing a tie at home to Bath City in the second qualifying round.
