WEYMOUTH manager Mark Molesley said he always backs the Terras to respond, after his side came back from a goal down to see off Staines Town 4-1 in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South.

A headed brace from Stephane Zubar, a sublime 20-yard free-kick from Jake McCarthy and a great strike from Brandon Goodship saw the Terras recover from an early George Barker penalty.

When asked if he was fearing the worst after that penalty, Molesley said: “No, I always back us to respond.

“I know we have got the right character and that we will react in the right way, but obviously you do not want to go 1-0 away from home.”

Molesley praised the Swans however, who led for eight minutes before Goodship’s strike and held the Terras to 1-1 at half time, before Weymouth clicked into a fine groove to overcome Staines.

Molesley said: “I think Staines deserved to get on the scoresheet. It was a tight game in the first half, it was very open and very attacking and we had to weather the storm a little bit at times.”

It was Weymouth’s first win in all competitions since the 5-0 demolition of Dorchester Town in late August and Molesley was very happy to be back to winning ways.

Molesley said: “I am delighted to get three points back on board. With no game last week and with a minor sticky patch it was good to chalk up a win and get three points on board, so I am delighted with an away win.”

Molesley in particular highlighted the variety in the goals scored, with one free-kick, Goodship back among the goals and two headers from Zubar.

Molesley said: “I felt like in the second half we were a lot more professional, a lot more fluid, a lot more defensively sound and it gave us a good foundation to build on.

“I was pleased with the type of goals, it shows that we score different types of goals. Brandon (Goodship) was back in the goals with a great strike, a great free-kick from Jake McCarthy and two headers from Zubar as well.

“It shows that we can score from set pieces, from open play so from that point of view it is pleasing.”

Molesley did admit that the Terras’ lack of matches showed at points, but praised the Staines’ pitch.

Molesley said: “At times it looked like we had not played for two weeks, we looked a little bit shaky on what was probably a fantastic surface on the pitch, one that the lads were really purring at.

“But sometimes we were a bit sloppy in possession but like I said we had not played for two weeks.

“The most important was to get the win, and four goals and three points away from home is always good.”

Referring to Weymouth getting back to the top of the table as a result of the win, Molesley said: “The challenge is to stay there now.

“We are at the summit and people are going to want to take that away.”
