Cup loss bares little resemblance to Saturday says Weymouth’s Paul Maitland

WEYMOUTH Director of Football Paul Maitland says Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to Wimborne bares little or no resemblance to Saturday as the Terras prepare to host the Magpies for their second meeting in five days in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.

Goals from Louis Kellaway and Rhys Owen saw the Terras exit the Dorset Senior Cup in the first round, but Maitland says Saturday will be a very different game.

Maitland said: “The result was disappointing but it bares little or no resemblance to Saturday, it will be a very different game.

“We learned a good deal about Wimborne because they were a lot closer to what you perceive their level to be on Saturday.”

Maitland said the Terras learned a lot about themselves on Saturday, but bemoaned having to play the same side twice in five days and said that Ben Thomson is a doubt for the clash.

Maitland said: “We learned a lot about ourselves, we put out a good competitive side and we did not play well enough so credit to Wimborne because they did play well.

“It is always disappointing when you have got to play the same side twice in five days because it just makes life harder for both parties.”

The Terras made a number of changes from the side that beat Staines Town on the weekend 4-1 and Maitland explained playing time was a factor, with three players having returned to the club recently.

Maitland said: “We made vast changes from Saturday but we felt it was imperative to make sure that all of the squad were topped up on playing time and minutes and to give some just a breather.

“But also an opportunity for players who have not necessarily been in the starting 11 to nail down a place or an opportunity to remind us of their key attributes or plus points.

“While the result was not great there were some good bits in there and some bits we want to work on.”
