MARK Molesley credited his players for digging in and getting a hard-fought 2-1 win at Basingstoke Town in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South.

Goals from Brandon Goodship and the returning Ben Thomson handed Weymouth all three points, despite an early goal from Sam Argent.

Molesley said: “I thought the boys defended well and kept working, I never felt at any point we were dominating the game, where usually we are used to having a lot of possession and feeling like we are on top.

“We did not feel like that but the boys dug in and got the points without probably playing at their best.

“I think it is a good sign.”

The result, coupled with Hendon’s 3-1 loss at Salisbury, means that Weymouth cannot now be overtaken at the top of the table by teams that have games in hand over them.

Molesley praised Weymouth’s opponents, who had numerous chances to add to their goal and took control of large portions of the match.

Molesley said: “I am delighted with three points, Basingstoke really gave us a good run for our money.

“Credit to them I thought that was probably the best attacking display that we have played against, they had a real threat, so I am delighted that we stood up to their threats and ran out winners.”

The Terras lost Callum Buckley shortly before the match, as he fell ill in the warm-up and was deemed not fit enough to play.

When asked if he felt fortunate to come away with the three points, Molesley admitted the Terras had the rub of the green.

Molesley said: “It was end-to-end, I thought it was two teams going at it.

“I did not think we were at our free-flowing best.

“We lost Buckers (Callum Buckley) in the warm-up, we had to reshuffle last minute so considering all of those factors I think we pulled it out of the bag.

“We probably feel a bit fortunate but you earn your own luck in this game.”

Molesley gave praise to Ben Thomson however, who marked his return to the starting line-up after injury with a goal in the 75th minute.

Molesley said: “I thought he led the line fantastically well, got the winner but I think his all round game showed what a handful he is and we have missed him.

“We have missed that physicality up front and so it was disappointing to lose Buckers but pleasing that we were able to call upon Ben Thomson.”
