Brandon Goodship knew winning chance would come

BRANDON Goodship admitted he knew he would get another chance as his late winner saw Weymouth take all three points against Dorchester in a 1-0 Boxing Day derby victory.

Goodship saw an effort tipped on to the underside of the bar and bounce back out in the first half, but was alert to pounce when substitute Yemi Odubade had a shot saved, as Goodship fired home in the 90th minute.

Speaking about his first chance, Goodship said: “For sure, in the first half Baggie has cut it back to me, I just wanted to make sure I got a good contact and to be fair the lad (Dorchester goalkeeper Kingsley Latham) has pulled out a very good save and tipped it on to the bar.

“I knew that I would get another chance and that I just needed to be alert for when it came to take it.”

The game had been a scrappy affair up until that point, with both sides having golden chances to take the lead, the Terras through Goodship and the Magpies through Sam Jackson.

When asked if he was relieved to get that late winner, Goodship replied: “A bit of relief but more just the celebration really, Boxing Day is about football, we turned up and did not let the occasion get the better of us because it can, there was a big crowd.

“I thought the boys handled it excellently, back to front I thought we dug out a good 1-0 win which we don’t often do.”

Goodship was full of compliments for Latham, who had a superb game for the Magpies, denying the Terras on a handful of occasions before being beaten late on.

Goodship said: “I think Kingsley got man of the match in the end, I knew him from my time at Yeovil, he was a young lad at Yeovil.

“I knew he was a good goalkeeper, it doesn’t surprise me that he is doing well here.

“It is a testament to him but like I said we are just delighted to get the three points and move on to a massive game (against Taunton Town).”

Weymouth travel to top-of-the-table Taunton Town today (3pm), knowing a win will allow them to overtake the Peacocks via games in hand.
