You’re a Wizard Harry

GOSPORT BOROUGH 0

WEYMOUTH 2

Baker 45+2’, 55’

Weymouth had Harry Baker to thank for the second time in a week as his two goals helped the Terras overcome Gosport Borough at Privett Park.

The victory was made even sweeter by league leaders Taunton Town dropping three points at Salisbury and Metropolitan Police losing at Wimborne Town.

Weymouth now sit in second place in the Evo-Stik League South Premier South table, just four points off leaders Taunton and with three games in hand.

Baker was rewarded with a place in the starting eleven after his heroics earned the Terras a 4-3 victory at Salisbury last weekend.

Weymouth had to deal with some early pressure from Gosport on 9 minutes, after Weymouth had cleared a corner Gosport thought they had found a way through the Terras defence only to see the linesman raise his flag for offside.

Looking to continue from where he left off, Harry Baker then had an opportunity after 15 minutes when Josh Wakefield looked to have slipped him in, but Gosport keeper O’Flaherty was there to meet the ball first.

Stephane Zubar looked to add to his 7-goal tally for the season on half-an-hour, unfortunately for the Terras he saw his 35-yard effort flew over the bar.

Three minutes later and the Terras seemed to step things up a gear, Cameron Murray and Abdulai Baggie combined well before Baggie drove at the Gosport defence, however he saw his cross gathered by O’Flaherty.

Baker continued to probe at the Gosport backline, Brandon Goodship cleverly chipped a through ball which Baker chested down well but couldn’t keep his effort from going over the bar.

With 4 minutes to play until half-time, Calvin Brooks had caught the keeper off his line but his 40-yard looping effort went just wide.

It looked as though Gosport were going to hold on until half-time when they prevented Murray finding a way through with a minute to play.

Two minutes into added-time and Weymouth did eventually find a way through, Goodship and Wakefield combined and when Wakefield played a reverse pass into the path of Baker, the Weymouth frontman shrugged off his defender and rounded the keeper to put the Terras one up.

Ten minutes into the second-half and Jordan Ngalo went close when he cut inside and fired just wide.

A minute later and Baker scored his third goal in a week and doubled the Terras lead, although Brooks has to take the majority of the credit, it was Baker who was there to deflect his effort into the back of the net.

Gosport looked to respond, former Terra Charlie Davis had an effort from distance saved by Tom McHale and Pennery missed a good opportunity when he headered over at the back-post.

But a resilient Weymouth side saw out the rest of the half to seal an important three points in their bid for promotion.

The Terras are next in action when Basingstoke Town visit the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday afternoon (3pm kick-off).
