Paul Maitland emphasises positives after Weymouth cup defeat

WEYMOUTH director of football Paul Maitland emphasised the positives from seeing some great performances from the club’s young footballers, as the Terras lost their Dorset Senior Cup semi-final 2-0 to Poole Town.

Maitland also admitted that the semi-final played second fiddle to the league, with only three players keeping their places from the 0-0 draw with Wimborne on Saturday.

Maitland said: “I think with the stage we are at with the season, and the bigger picture, it was always going to be second fiddle to the league campaign. I don’t think anybody that came here was expecting much different.

“But also there is some really good positives from (the match against Poole) because there were some really good performances from the young players that are in the area that we have been keeping tabs on.

“Lads that have been in the Champion (Sports) that have been in our youth set-up as well so it was great to see some of them, and they did not disgrace themselves by any stretch of the imagination.

“Considering you had four 17-year-olds out here and a couple of 18-year-olds as well I thought they performed admirably.

“Poole were fairly strong, I know they made a couple of changes but there was a lot more recognisable faces in their side.”

Weymouth host Swindon Supermarine on Saturday (3pm).
